France’s Largest Battery Storage System Powers Up

France big battery

In a major step forward for renewable energy infrastructure, France has officially launched its largest battery energy storage system (BESS) to date. Developed by UK-based Harmony Energy, the new facility is situated at the port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire and represents a significant advancement in grid-scale storage capacity. With an output of 100 MW and a storage capacity of 200 MWh, this project positions France at the forefront of battery storage technology in Europe.

1. Advanced Technology and Seamless Grid Integration

The battery storage system is connected to the RTE (Réseau de Transport d’Électricité) transmission network, operating at a charge and discharge voltage of 63 kV. This setup is optimized for grid balancing, improving the stability and reliability of the electricity supply across the region. The BESS utilizes Tesla’s high-performance Megapack batteries and is managed by the Autobidder AI-driven control platform, which ensures efficient energy dispatch and real-time responsiveness. With an expected operational lifespan of 15 years—and potential for extension through upgrades—this largest battery storage system in France is designed for both performance and longevity.

2. From Fossil Fuels to Clean Energy Leadership

What makes this largest solar battery storage project even more notable is its location: the site of the former Cheviré power station, which once ran on coal, gas, and oil. This symbolic transformation highlights how industrial spaces can be repurposed to support a sustainable future.

As Andy Symonds, CEO of Harmony Energy France, stated, “Energy storage is a fundamental pillar for building a new low-carbon, reliable, and competitive energy model.” The project not only enhances the efficiency of France’s solar and renewable energy output but also serves as a model for future battery energy storage system deployments nationwide.
